Moving Forward & What’s Next
My vision for how I want to continue my research on power and gender in Macbeth
- I would like to look at the trends and collocates to see what comes up that is interesting
- I am interested in looking at Lady Macbeth and power and seeing what ways the language surrounding power is being used
- Also looking at what critics have said about Lady Macbeth and power and building off of their research to find my data
I also want to make a note that this project is still a work in progress and I hope to uncover more patterns and data that could be useful to scholars and students!
What I ended up seeing that I didn’t notice before I did the textual analysis: Before using any digital tools, looking at the scene I had chosen to analyze for this project I hadn’t put much thought into how each of the times that fear is mentioned, it had a different way in which it was used. I began to see both similar patterns emerge between fear and Macduff but also different patterns. With analysis, it allowed me to see things that other researchers haven’t found yet which is cool because they can build their research off of my data to uncover more things that haven’t been discovered in Macbeth yet.
As an English and Secondary Education major being able to use textual analysis in the classroom is going to be a helpful tool to have. Incorporating a digital tool such as Voyant would be beneficial as students could understand what terms are getting connected and use textual analysis to find out why and what patterns they come across.
